Beat the heat

The heat is on! Summer in Chennai conjures up visions of dusty roads, increasing pollution and the merciless rays of the sun. But if you are lucky enough to have a garden or a pool, then it’s time to have fun under the sun. Retail Plus tells you how to transform your garden or poolside into a sanctuary this summer

If the blazing sun is a sign to go by, then we know that the months of summer are already upon us. The rays of the sun mercilessly shine down (a little too enthusiastically) on mere mortals who dread the very thought of what’s in store for them. But if you are among the lucky few to have a garden nestled in your home, then unwind under your canopy of greenery.

When high-pressure jobs and impossible deadlines are the buzzwords these days, your garden is a haven of sorts where you can relax and connect with your inner self. You wouldn’t want to come back after a hard day’s work just to loosen up in the uncomfortable chair in your garden. Forget about relaxing, you might even end up nursing a sore back. Furnishing your outdoor space bears as much importance as indoors.

Comfort should be the key word while choosing furniture to adorn your garden. Porch swings, recliner furniture and patio furniture are the ultimate choices. A combination of elegance in design and comfort are an integral part of your outdoor extravagance. It’s all about creating the right ambience, and lighting plays a vital role.

Illuminating your garden or poolside is an art by itself and allows you to exercise your creativity. Never light up your garden more than required. The trick of lighting the important areas and leaving the others always works as it prevents your garden from looking like a mammoth bulb. Similarly, installing lights in undergrowth or bushes defeats the very purpose of lighting.

If it’s your poolside, then you can add a dramatic touch with lighting and appropriate furniture. Poolside parties are great ways to relax with friends and have a good time. Lights with a soft glow outline your pool and create a classy ambience. With wheeled chaises and easy recliners in weather-resistant fabrics (solution dyed acrylic or polyester) thrown in, you have it all going for you as far as your poolside décor is concerned.

The most important thing to keep in mind, whether it is poolside or garden décor is shade. Soaking up the sun might be appealing but you wouldn’t want to get a patchy tan or worse, sunburn. Summertime needn’t be all that awful. With a bit of creativity, you can transform your garden or poolside into your sanctuary and beat the heat!
