Six hundred engineering undergrads made their way to Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering (SVCE), Sri Perumbudur on March 15, 2008 to put themselves through an exclusive mock placement grind. The entire organisation of the event was spearheaded by the Forum for Economic Studies by Engineers (FORESE), a pro-active student group at SVCE, along with the combined efforts of the in-house placement cell. Forty-five HR panellists were brought in for the activity from blue-ribbon conglomerates like Cognizant, Infosys, HCL, Caterpillar, EDS, MPL and several others.
The day was power-packed with aptitude tests, group discussions, personal interviews and anything else that had the remotest possibility of turning up during a real assessment situation. Shruthilaya, a triple ‘E’ candidate, recounts, “Most of us enter college with the dream of landing ourselves an enticing job offer plus perks. I think I’ve moved one step closer now, to making myself worthy of striking such a bargain. All of us had to come dressed in formals, bringing our resumes and I was given a thorough follow-up of my performance by the HR professional. There may still be a long way to go before companies actually start visiting, but I feel confident enough to face them right now!”
Janani, a computer science fresher, says, “This is not a stand-alone event as such. We have been coming to college every weekend for the past four weeks for intensive soft-skills workshops. The fact is that you may have stuff, but it’s of no use, unless you know how to put it across to convince your employer.” The energetic young organisers had as much to gain out of the experience as the prospective candidate. Says Prashanth.V.M. of FORESE, “I got to test my management skills while coordinating this event and our team received rave reviews from the visiting HRs for our organisational effort. The slogan on our aptitude questionnaires reads, ‘Being prepared is half the battle won!’. The massive turnout today, despite it being a weekend is proof enough of how much teens value their careers.” Let’s hope these teens fly high with their wings of fire!
