Fashion Q: Enchanting Erum

This elegant designer is every Indian bride’s dream come true. Erum Ali took Chennai fashion circles by storm when she made her foray into it in 2001

Season’s wardrobe

The kind of clothes that I design cannot remain within a bracket of any particular season. There are some emerging trends though, like the one-piece lehenga for the bridal trousseau. It is kind of like a gorgeous Indian red carpet gown. My bridal work is very fancy and heavy with embellishments and embroidery.

Colour Palette

I use tones on tones or shades of the same family. Like pinks fading out into mauves. A spectrum of muted hues with one bright colour, like a deep red amidst browns also work well.

Trims and Trappings

I often help with choosing jewellery to go with the bridal outfit. If a bride has an antique necklace that has been passed down to her from her ancestors, then the design of the trousseau will itself revolve around this piece. Otherwise, safe shades like emerald greens, ruby reds and tourmaline will take off with any kind of jewellery. Coordinated clutch bags, crystal-studded or embroidered shoes, brooches and matching hair clasps designed by me, complete the look.

Personal styling

Ah…I’m a shabby dresser! I work with clothes round the clock and am quite saturated with them. I believe that if you are going to dress to kill everyday, it’s just going to bore the people around you. So, I wait for an occasion and then do myself up nicely.

Anything for hubby, Abaas?

Oh! He looks fabulous in everything, although I do hate to admit it to him! He has this sense of style which allows him to get away with anything that he wears. But to pick one outfit, I’d say his biker look is irresistible. Every Sunday morning when he puts on his leather jacket and biker’s shades, it just gets my heart racing!

Metro mode

I think women in Chennai have very distinctive and intellectual tastes. You could probably take a look at an outfit and blindly pinpoint who it belongs to. Take Anita Ratnam or Shobana for example. This just does not happen anywhere else in the country!
