Mad about Malls

With Chennai all set to get many new malls, mall rats will be delighted. What is it about malls that drive footfalls? Read on…

Malls are the in-thing especially among teenyboppers and young professionals. So, what makes malls so popular?

What do consumers want? In a recent study conducted among 200 IT employees who visit malls, the following traits were revealed.

A majority of mall visitors i.e., 41% feel that the most ideal mall is the one that houses multiplexes, retail shops, food courts, promotional activities, game centres, lifestyle products and a play pool.

About 30% of the respondents frequent malls once a month.

A greater part of these consumers (42%) visit malls to watch movies and the second best reason is to shop at clothing stores and eating in food courts.

When questioned about the importance of essential features they look for, a whooping 100% of respondents say that parking facility is the most important. This is followed by maintenance/hygiene of malls by 90% of respondents. The third, fourth and fifth importance is given to location, ambience and cost of goods.

The most desired feature which 70% of consumers choose are brand availability and the second, choice of entertainment/recreational activities by 54% of them. However the next choices were easy access for the aged (50%), friendly customer service (46%) and play pool facility (26%).

As per the study, today, consumers distribute their spending power in these percentages – for clothing and lifestyle products it is 29%, for food it is 20%, for entertainment it totals to 26% and for home need products it is 25%.
