TEEN TALK

I know what you did last summer!

Blazing sun, long holidays, with the exam fever just getting over, let’s check out how the city’s teenagers would like to chill out at summer camps

Dirty camps camouflaged in greenery, pitch-dark forests, tiresome hours of trekking, summer camps do bring in such colourful pictures to our minds! But camps are not just about trekking and hiking. When queried on his summer camp experiences,

Arjun Menon, an engineering college student says, “It’s all about enjoying your summer, but it could be useful as well. You also get to meet a lot of people with the same interests and the same wavelength. While I was a kid, I used to attend the Future Kids camp. They teach programming at a very young age. I know I have learnt a lot from my summer camps which I otherwise wouldn’t have had an exposure to. It was informative but more fun than school.” S. Janani has her interests elsewhere, “This summer, I am planning to sign up for a fashion jewellery design camp in Mylapore. Fashion generally intrigues me! So I am going to try my hand at it….Who knows perhaps I may start my own designer boutique in future?”

16-year-old Divya Dwarakanath has this say about summer camps, “I personally feel that summer camps are great to remove stress and strain from your mind and body. It keeps you calm and cool during the aggressive summer assaults. Roy, a Class XII student, strikes a different note, “I had been to camps as a child to learn swimming, horse riding etc. But now I would rather play cricket with my pals than visit any camp. And with the upcoming 20-20 series, who has time for anything else?” Many parents would rather send their teens to some camp or the other rather than have them breathe down their necks every time they are bored!

But camps are more than escape modules for frazzled parents, they teach our teens to become great team players, to develop leadership skills and most of all to become better individuals. Happy camping!
