Supermarket Spotting

Chennai’s supermarkets are constantly introducing new schemes to attract and engage customers. A dekko at what’s new in the city’s supermarkets…

The supermarket culture is here to stay in Chennai. One of the advantages of these outlets over the traditional grocer stores – which are also going in for supermarket-like displays – is knowing clearly what is available. However, the abundance can also make one flounder and opt for known products only. Therefore, the outlets have to introduce and promote products without compromising on their brand neutrality.

A quick survey of what is new and exciting in these stores revealed:

SPENCER’S DAILY:

This chain is experimenting with a Home Meal Replacement Scheme in limited outlets.

The idea is to make available pre-cooked and ready-to-eat – or eat with minimum processing at home-foods. These include rotis, vegetables and non-vegetarian dishes. Also available and popular are the dosa and idli batters.

The concept is aimed at easing the work for women at home.

NILGIRIS:

At Nilgiris, a new range of in-house brand cookies have been introduced at Rs.40-45 per pack.

One of the latest trends observed here is that health foods are fast moving. For instance, Sunfeast’s Flex seed biscuits are doing well. Meuseli and other Kellogg’s products have a huge market. One of the latest is a target aimed at women for slimness, called K-Pack. Oats in different flavours such as dates, apples, etc are also doing well we learn. Kissan’s Amaze, a drink and powder aimed at improving brainpower in children, is yet another product doing well in the market.

In the fancy food section, Maggi’s cup noodles is a new entrant.

Pond’s age-resistance cream is also doing well.

SUBHIKSHA

A new range of savouries – Mewar and Chettinad – have become quite popular thanks to their freshness and the assurance that they are made from good quality refined oil.

Atac, a new detergent that can be used for both washing machines and bucket wash has hit the market and is doing well.
