Passion for fabric

Her love for fabric and design led Usha to custom-making wardrobes and more.

A childhood passion for fabrics coupled with some technical training in cutting and pattern-making from Bangalore egged Usha Umapathi into starting a boutique Her House in 1990. "Garment-making has always been my passion and I have always been in touch with clothes and embroidery. I ran a boutique for readymades for 10 years before I started Lasya," says Usha.

Over the years she realized that every individual's needs are different and that she draws immense satisfaction from designing customized clothes for people. "It is a great challenge and I truly enjoy the designing clothes for people according to their form, frame and personality - because I want to make what suits them the best," says Usha.

She designs both Indian and Western clothes and has a large clientele both within India and abroad, she tells us. "We source fabrics according to our needs and requirements. We don't stock fabrics because there is such a variety available and people's requirements are also different," she tells us. She also specialises in redesigning wardrobes. Most of her clients have entire wardrobes designed by her.

Usha designs wedding trousseau as well. "We help brides-to-be right from the time the wedding is fixed to the big day and make sure they get clothes within their budget without much wastage." She also helps them co-ordinate accessories like costume jewellery, evening bags and footwear.

Lasya specialises in designer blouses and creating embroidery on sarees. "Most people don't find good fitting blouses. I believe I make blouses with great fits and my clients have been happy with my service," says Usha. She tells us that she truly loves her work and is proud to have been doing this for nineteen years. She chose the name Lasya because it symbolizes creativity.

Usha meets clients by appointment and can be reached at Lasya, 19/1 Kasturi apartments, off Kasturi Ranga road, Alwarpet, ph:24990649/ 24984303/ 9840022007.
