Pet'ty play

Pet toys are now becoming a necessity rather than a mere luxury, toys keep the pets entertained and also give them plenty of exercise!

“Don’t mess up the house. Keep it clean! Be a good boy! And play with your toys!” No, this is not a parent trying to tame his notorious child but Nitisha Sheba talking to her pet dog shimmer before leaving him home alone. These days pets are more than just a part of the family. They are given more attention, more care and their needs and essentials now form a part of the family budget too.

A pet’s needs are expanding and new introductions into the market are making a pet’s life better and enabling better maintenance to the owner. Pet toys are now becoming an essential rather than a mere luxury. Pet toys keep the pets entertained and also give them plenty of exercise. These toys are made of either plastic, rubber or even edible materials and are very fancy can be squeaky, glittery and glowing, soft or hard depending on the pet and its need.

Pets that are not active and do not play can be bored to death and might even turn obese, toys can keep them engaged as well as gives them enough physical activity to keep them in shape. Dogs love to chew upon edible bones or bone-flavored and shaped plastic toys, cats love fish and shrimp-flavored toys and scratching posts. They love catnip bubbles too.

“Frodo loves chewing on his edible dog chew which is bone shaped and flavoured and can do that all day to keep himself engaged. To keep all the furniture and cushion covers in the best of its form and this is mandatory for my hyperactive Frodo. He loves water sports, rubber balls and chasing cats and catching insects” said his owner Teja.

The not so naughty pets, fishes can make great companions too “maintaining an aquarium clean, feeding the fish with the right amount of food at the right time is quite a job and just seeing the fish alive doesn’t mean it is healthy there is a lot more to it. Fishes are more of ornamental pets so the design and the planting in aquarium is what I give preference to. I use different coloured pebbles and change the plantation inside to give different vibrant looks to my little fish world” says Suraj Kumar while talking about the aquarium he designed for his new fish Angel.

Pet toys make great pet gifts too. You can gift your pet or your friend’s pets on special occasions with such toys which they will cherish for long. Squeaky toys, wands, danglers, soft toys, colourful sparkle balls of different sizes as per the age of the pet are some of the pet toys most sought after and are now available in super markets and pet stores. The life of the toy depends on the extent of activity of the pet and also its quality. Cheeto, the furry white cat owned by Vidya Sagar loves playing with her dummy rat which is named jerry. He says “you can see the domination and the content in her eyes when she spots Jerry anywhere in the house. She tosses the toy around and fiddles with it and it gives her immense pleasure to be in the company of Jerry”.

The latest in market are the toys that move and look like moving preys which are fun to watch for both the pet and the onlookers. Dental toys include rope and rubber toys that can be used to tease your pets and stimulate their natural hunting instincts and should be sturdy enough to bear their scratching and biting. Most pets love flavored tennis balls. However, they should not be small enough to be swallowed by them and become a potential choking hazard.

These toys are easily available in pet stores and other general outlets at extremely affordable prices. If used properly, they enhance the mental and physical expertise of your pet and keep them happy for hours at end.
