Essential micronutrient of cane

ZINC IS an essential micronutrient, influencing sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) growth and development.

It is a constituent of various enzymes that are important for plant metabolism. Its role is linked with chlorophyll formation, carbon dioxide evolution and utilization.

Zinc deficiency, causes premature yellowing followed by drying of leaf tips and leaf margins. Zinc deficiency in soil can be corrected by basal application of 37.5 kg of zinc sulphate per hectare and in sugarcane, by foliar application of zinc sulphate (0.5 per cent) on 90, 105 and 120 days after planting.
