Management of mulberry root rot
MULBERRY IS affected by a number of diseases caused by fungi and bacteria, which result in severe yield loss besides reducing the nutritive value of leaves.
The disease is caused by soil borne fungi and is disastrous. Weeds are considered as the carrier of many fungal spores and also help in multiplication of pathogens.
Several factors
Various factors such as type of planting, planting material from infected garden, low soil organic matter content, water stress condition, act as predisposing factors for disease outbreak.
The pest damages the fine feeder roots followed by rapid decay of main root system leaving the stump.
Fail to sprout
Sudden withering of leaves and total decaying of primary and secondary root barks appear in isolated patches in a garden. The affected plants fail to sprout after pruning and get dried up completely.
The diseased plants exhibit yellowing and dropping of the leaves. Avoid planting of mulberry in disease hot spot areas.
Pest management
Application of more quantity of organic manures such as Farm Yard Manure and compost.
Remove the diseased and dead plants and burn them immediately to avoid the dispersal of pathogenic spores.
Dip the roots of saplings in carbendazim (0.1 per cent) or copper oxychloride (0.25 per cent) or dithane.
Apply 3-4 g of dithane M45 in the pit before planting.
Apply neem, pungam or castor cakes at 2000 kg/ha to reduce the root rot incidence.
Apply Trichoderma viride or Bacillus subtilis or Pseudomonas fluorescens along with FYM (1:1) at 25 g/plant around the roots of affected plants.
