IGCAR's training initiative

IN YET another attempt at motivating students to take up research as a career, the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, is organizing a six-week summer training programme in physics and chemistry for students entering the final year of M.Sc.

The programme — the physics and chemistry of nanomaterials — will involve both theoretical and hands-on laboratory work.

Twenty students selected from each discipline will be provided a stipend of Rs3,000 per month. For more details, contact the Senior Scientist at 044-28253993, 09840777546 or igcardae@md2.vsnl.net.in

IGCAR's initiative is similar to what the Department of Atomic Energy has undertaken on a larger scale. DAE recently signed a memorandum with Mumbai University to start a 5-year integrated M.Sc course.

Faced with acute shortage of quality students and the difficulty in retaining them, DAE has made provisions to provide free accommodation and fee exemption to the selected 30 students.
