Control of climber weeds in sugarcane

Proper management is necessary

MANAGEMENT OF climber weeds in sugarcane cultivation is an important practice to be followed by famers to get better cane yield and growth.

The primary mode of climber weed propagation is through excreta of birds. Irrigation water and wind are secondary factors for its spread.

Cane canopy

The climber weeds grow on the sugarcane plants and reach the top of the cane canopy and produce more branches and bio mass.

Each node of the branch bears a flower and produces a number of seeds.

Even pre emergence herbicide sprayed fields may not be free from this weed problem as sometimes the seeds may have lodged deep inside the soil and germinate under favourable conditions.

Effective management

— The weeds may be removed by uprooting before pod or capsule setting as it will arrest the further spread in the field.

— When the labourers are engaged for detrashing operations on the 5th and 7th month of crop age, they can uproot the climber weeds.

This will definitely reduce the intensity and further spread of weeds.

— If the weed intensity is high, then spraying 2,4-D sodium salt at 5 g per litre of water may be effective.
