Managing stem borer in mango trees
|
The pest causes severe loss
|
THE MANGO stem borer does not appear in all mango-cultivating areas but in the areas where it is found it causes severe loss.
Late instars of the grubs cause more damage than early instars. The important symptoms of the infestation are the holes on the bark due to feeding. At later stage of infestation the mango trees dry up.
The pest can be managed by the following practices.
Cultural practices
Prune off the infested twigs of tree and destroy the late instar larvae of the insect.
Chemical methods
Put 38 Carbofuron 3G at the rate of 5 g per hole and then plug it with copper oxychloride paste or plug it with mud. Close the holes by the cotton plugs dipped in chloroform or kerosene.
Inject the tree with 0.2 ml methyl parathion.
Apply few drops of Carbon disulfide or fenvolarate or dichlorovos into the holes and plug the same.
Keep aluminium phosphide tablets in the holes and plug them.
If infestation is severe then apply the copper oxychloride paste on the trunk of the tree.
