Creating nuclear islands

Though nuclear fuel reprocessing and waste management, including vitrification, are currently not located in one place, the accent now is to bring them all together.

“In future, reprocessing and waste management will be integrated,” said Dr. Srikumar Banerjee, Director of BARC, Mumbai.

“Now the waste is moved from one plant to another. When we integrate, the movement of the waste will be minimized.” According to him the model for future reactors is to have “nuclear islands.”

The idea is to bring in only the primary fuel and then keep on producing energy while reprocessing the spent fuel, refabricating the fuel and finally vitrifying the nuclear waste — all done within the same location. “Kalpakkam will eventually become one such nuclear island,” said Dr. Banerjee. — R.P.
