FARM QUERIES

Seed quality

Is there any simple way to check the germinating quality of the seeds before sowing?

S. Panickar

Thrissur, Kerala

Seed virility is important for good germination and yield. Only good quality seeds germinate well and grow into healthy plants. Before buying a large amount of seed for sowing, it is better to check the germinating nature of the seeds by taking a handful of them (say about 100 seeds) and sowing it on a small wet patch of soil. Sprinkle water over it. After a week check the germinated seedlings. If more than 90 seeds have sprouted then the seed quality is good.
