Light sensitivity

How are we able to sense light even with the eyes closed?

We can make out light even though our eyes are closed as the eye lids are thin structures which allow bright light to pass through. We are all familiar with the fact that light from a bright torch when kept against our fingers passes through them giving a red colour. This red colour is due to the blood flowing through the capillaries in our fingers.

The same phenomenon will be noticed when one puts a small bright torch light into one's mouth. The light will be seen shining through the cheeks.

When bright light can pass through the tissue of our fingers and the cheek it definitely can pass through the closed lids ( provided it is bright enough).
