Dead phytoplankton as sea-floor carbon sinks

Blooms of tiny phytoplankton soak up CO{-2} in the marine plants. When the phytoplankton die, they drift to the ocean depths, where the carbon locked inside their cells is stored for centuries in sediments on the ocean floor.
