FARM QUERIES

Prolific bearers

Is it true that lab lab vines (avarai in Tamil) become prolific bearers when grown under moringa (drumstick) trees?

Geetha Raman

Tirunelveli

The seeds of lab lab are sown in a pit under a full grown moringa (drumstick) tree. After the seedlings reach a height of one feet they are made to pass through a small hole made in the stem of the moringa tree.

The hole is plugged witj cow dung and kerosene mixture. The vines grow and spread all over the tree and yield profusely. Farmers in Keppilingampatti village in Virudunagar district, Tamil Nadu practice this method.
