The BAIF- Institute for Rural Development, Tiptur, Tumkur district, is organizing a Jackfruit workshop at Nittur in Gubbi Taluka, Tumkur district on 7.6 2009.
The workshop is being organized in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, Zilla Panchayat, Tumkur.
The event is to take place at Sri Vinayak Composite Junior College premises, Kadaba road, Nittur. It starts at 10 AM and concludes at 6 PM.
Objective
The objective of the workshop is to get an understanding of the wide varieties of jackfruit, their documentation, followed by germplasm collection and propagation for future purpose.
About 150 to 200 varieties of jackfruit are expected to be displayed in the mela. Sale of various items prepared from jackfruit has also been arranged on this occasion.
About 800 to 1000 people from nearby villages are expected to participate in the programme.
Different programmes
Display and sale of jackfruits, local seedlings, grafted seedlings, jackfruit based products such as pappad, chips and other processed items, books related to agriculture, horticulture and jackfruit, organically grown food products and interaction with jackfruit growers and scientists are some of the programmes for the day.
A committee of experts has also been formed to award a prize to the best jackfruit farmer.
