Animal tears
Do animals have tear glands? If yes, what is their purpose?
JAI SUNDHER
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
In reality tears are secretions of lacrimal glands situated at the outer upper angle of the orbit. These are compound recimose glands. They yield watery secretions containing appreciable amount of sodium chloride, varying from 0.6 to 1.5 percent.
The secretion is remarkable for its lysozyme content; whence its bactericidal action. Their alveoli are lined by columnar or polyherdal cells, which are normally filled with granules, but, after profuse secretion, these disappear, and the cells become shorter and smaller.
The ducts, of which there are several , open at the upper fold of the conjunctiva near its outer extremity. Though the laughing and weeping centres in the brain of animals are not fully developed, as and when pain is evinced these lacrimations also occur in animals.
Lacrimation is meant for cleaning of the cornea and to destroy bacteria as it is also in human beings. The dry eyes will face discomfort in old people due to which preperations to keep wet are being prescribed.
