FARM QUERY

Increasing milk yield of cattle

Is there any natural method to increase milk yield in cattle other than feeding them with the usual hay or green grass?

J. Devanathan

Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu

Mr. Ponraj, an agricultural labourer at Velliammalpuram village, Uthamapalayam taluka, Theni district, maintains two cows. To his surprise, he found the leaves of grape vine cultivated in and around his village were useful to increase m i l k production in his animals.

He has since been f e e d i n g grape leaves to his cows and goats. The yield of milk has now increased by one to two litres per day, he claims. In Kumbum, Bodinaickanur, Chinnamanur blocks of Theni district, Tamil Nadu, grape farmers have discovered that the leaves of grape vine are relished by cattle and started feeding the pruned leaves and also dried grape leaves to them.
