FARM QUERY

Curing swelling in animals

Very often I notice that the ears of my jersey cow breeds are swollen. Though I have administered medicines as per the advice of a local veterinarian the swellings keep appearing. Can you kindly help me?

Ramakrisna Rau

Hubli, Karnataka

A farmer Mr. Chikkaveerappa, Nagamangala taluka, Mandya district, Karnataka.feeds leaves of wild tulsi or tenuiflorum (Ocimum sanctum), neem and wild bamboo (Bambusa arundinacea) to cattle affected with swelling on the faces and ears. He claims that the affected animals are cured within a few hours of feeding them the leaves. His community has been following this practice for long. Mr. Chikkaveerappa follows a similar practice for curing goats and sheep of swollen bodies. He crushes the leaves of tanner’s cassia (Cassia auriculata), a plant commonly found in Central and South India, and mixes them in around half a litre of buttermilk. He administers the prepared solution to the affected sheep and goats. The mixture is also smeared on their bodies. According to him, the treatment definitely cures the problem of swelling in animals.
