FARM QUERY

Tamarind and seed storage

Is it true that tamarind leaves can be used for storing paddy seeds?

Joshua Napiers

Chicago, U.S.

According to a document available with honeybee network Vol-19 (1) January-March 2008, on seed saving practices, farmers in Mali and Ghana use tamarind and crushed pepper leaves to store seeds. The seeds are sun dried by covering them with tamarind branches and leaves.

The leaves and seeds are then mixed and placed inside an air tight container. The container is opened only when the seeds are needed. Seeds of rice, millet, sorghum, soyabean and peanut are stored by this method.

But it remains to be seen whether the tamarind leaves dried separately and mixed with the sun dried seeds at the time of storage will have the same effect.
