FARM QUERY

Groundnut shells

Is it true that groundnut shells improve soil fertility?

S. Nagarajan

Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu

A farmer in Gambia called Awa Njie grows both rice and groundnut. She buries the shells into her field during ploughing the field and then plants her rice seedlings. After harvest she observed that her yield had increased. When neighbouring farmers saw this they also tried the same method and got similar results. The innovation is adopted by most of the farmers in her village.

Similarly in India a field trial conducted during Kharif season at Junagadh, Gujarat, on pigeon pea reveals that the groundnut shell mulch is highly effective and results in higher plant height as well as grain and straw yield (Source honey bee vol-19 (1), January-March-2008.
