Biodiversity Bill hearing in city

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 20. The Joint Parliamentary Committee on
the Biodiversity Bill, dealing with the conservation of
biodiversity and protection of farmer's rights, will be holding a
hearing here on at 3 p. m. on May 26.
An official release said that the Bill envisaged establishment of
an authority for protection of the rights of breeders and
farmers. The Bill also provides for improvement of genetic
diversity, registration of existing and new plants,
classification and documentation of plants, compulsory licensing
to ensure supply of patented seeds if the patent holder has not
arranged for production, distribution and maintenance of
statistics regarding biodiversity, seeds and genetic materials.
It said that the Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 14
had been notified in the India Gazette of the day.
It said that individuals and representatives of organisations
could attend the hearing. All the 20 members of the Committee,
including the chairman, and officials of the Lok Sabha
Secretariat and the Ministry of Agriculture are expected to be
present.
