Jewels robbed in HC campus

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JULY 13. A woman litigant was robbed of her gold jewels at knife point in the crowded High Court campus on Monday. The High Court police who initially refused to accept her complaint, had a case registered following the intervention of a senior police officer, today.

The victim, Mrs. Chamundeshwari (70), of Old Washermanpet in her complaint charged that she was sitting on the steps of the High Court next to the new chambers of the advocates, when two men accosted her.

They whipped out hidden knives and forced the woman to remove her six gold bangles weighing about six sovereigns and a seven sovereign gold chain. The gangsters walked away, warning her not to scream for help.

``It happened so swiftly that nobody even noticed the crime'' she claimed. It took more than two hours for Mrs. Chamundeshwari to collect herself and with the help of the lawyers, she went to the High Court police station. There she was given a hostile reception which only added to her agony. She charged that they dismissed her rudely.

Following this she sought the help of a senior police officer. Only after all this did the policemen initiate action. Late Thursday evening police personnel visited the victim's house and conducted enquiries.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a demand draft drawn for a value of Rs.2 lakhs was today found within the High Court campus. Advocates who found it handed it over to the Madras Bar Association (MBA) office. An MBA spokesman said the owners of the draft could produce proper authentication and receive the instrument.
