Jethmalani had to go for the sake of harmony: PM
The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
today asserted the only reason he asked Mr. Ram Jethmalani to
resign from the Union Cabinet was because his Government was
committed to ``promoting a harmonious relationship between
different wings of the State''. Mr. Vajpayee also dissociated
himself and his Government with the charges made by the former
Law Minister against the Chief Justice of India, Dr. A.S. Anand,
and the Attorney-General, Mr. Soli Sorabjee.
Marching orders for 2 officials
Even as the Government has ordered an inquiry
into the leakage of certain classified and privileged documents
in the possession of the Law Ministry, it issued marching orders
on Thursday night to the former Personal Secretary to Mr. Ram
Jethmalani and the Officer on Special Duty.
Jaswant non-committal on sanctions against Fiji
The External Affairs Minister, Mr. Jaswant
Singh, today left open the question of sanctions against Fiji.
``Let us see,'' was his response to a question about New Delhi's
course of action on the crisis in Fiji.
Ceasefire offer under deliberation, says Army
The Army today denied reports from Srinagar
attributed to the chief of staff of the 15th corps, Major General
Basant Singh, that the military offensive against militant groups
had been suspended in response to the ceasefire declared by the
Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen organisation.
'Operations stepped down'
The Army had reduced operations against
militants in response to the ceasefire announcement by the Hizbul
Mujahideen, the chief of staff of the 15 Corps, Major General
Basant Singh, said here today and described it as the first call
Jyoti Basu admitted to AIIMS
The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr. Jyoti
Basu, was hospitalised after he fell ill during a CPI (M) Central
Committee meeting here on Friday morning.
Farm policy favours private participation
The Government today came out with a National
Agriculture Policy aiming at over 4 per cent growth rate per
annum in the next two decades, favouring private sector
participation through contract farming and land leasing
arrangements and supporting the development of genetically-
modified food crop varieties. A major thrust will be on genetic
upgradation of indigenous and native breeds of cattle.
Fresh warrant against ex-Bofors chief
The special court for CBI cases today ordered
issue of fresh non- bailable warrant (NBW) for arresting Mr.
Martin Ardbo, former Chief of the Bofors company of Sweden, who
is one of the accused in the `Rs. 64 crore Bofors pay-off case'.
Bill to bar foreigners
A private member's bill to bar persons of
foreign origin from holding high Constitutional positions,
including the President and the Prime Minister, was introduced in
the Rajya Sabha by the Samajwadi Party member, Mr. Amar Singh.
21 officials suspended
The Orissa Chief Minister, Mr. Naveen
Patnaik, today directed forest authorities to suspend 21
employees of the Nandankanan Zoological Park in connection with
the killing of a crocodile on Wednesday night.
Mr. Patnaik has asked the authorities to deploy 15 forest guards
to prevent any such incidents.
100 bombs recovered
The CID officers investigating the serial
blasts case have recovered nearly 100 bombs from the house of a
Deendari in Nuzvid near here on Friday.
