NDA meet to discuss West Bengal situation
The Prime Minister, Mr. A. B. Vajpayee,
called on the President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, today and held
talks for 45 minutes. It is understood that he briefed the
President on his 15-day visit to the United States.
Advani hits out at Basu
The Union Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani,
gave a hard-hitting response to the West Bengal, Mr. Jyoti Basu's
letter saying he did not expect a State Government to justify
violence by marxist cadres under the plea that it was
retaliatory.
India misses chances, loses to S. Korea
A disjointed India squandered away chances and
suffered their first defeat going down to South Korea 0-2 in a
Pool B league encounter of the Olympic hockey competition today.

today after telecom officers decided to put aside their

Gopal waiting for word from Veerappan

Governments, Mr. R. R. Gopal, has started his fourth mission to
rescue Mr. Rajkumar, Kannada filmstar, abducted by the forest
brigand Veerappan, by entering the Thalamalai forests in Sathy
taluk early this morning.
'Parvathamma in good health'
Ms. Parvathamma Rajkumar, wife of the
abducted Kannada film star, Mr. Rajkumar, who was admitted to a
private hospital here last night with chest pain, is in good
health.
'All support for democracy but not for prescriptive approach'
India will actively shape the recent
political initiative to build a worldwide Community of
Democracies, but is reluctant to adopt a prescriptive approach in
promoting political freedom worldwide.
Rajkumar issue: TN deposition irks Karnataka
The S.M. Krishna Government is clearly
unhappy over the Tamil Nadu Government's latest affidavit before
the Supreme Court, complaining that it did not inform the latter
of the visit of Mr. Rajkumar to his farmhouse at Gajanur, in
Erode district, on July 30.
India to pull out forces
India has decided to pull out its forces from
Sierra Leone. The pull-out would be in phases and full withdrawal

Pakistan has undertaken serial production of

$300 million ADB loan
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) today approved a $ 300 million
