S.C. stays release of 51 Veerappan men
The Supreme Court today in the `Rajkumar
abduction-Veerappan associates accused case' set aside the August
19 order passed by the designated court, Mysore granting
`consent' to the special public prosecutor's application to
withdraw `TADA' charges against 51 Veerappan associates, as the
court's order ``does not meet the requirements of Section 321 of
the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and is bad in law''.
Nedumaran pulls out
The Tamils Nationalist Movement leader and key
negotiator in the kidnap crisis, Mr. P. Nedumaran, today suddenly
refused to undertake any further mission to the forest to
negotiate with the bandit Veerappan release of the Kannada actor,
Mr. rajkumar, and another person.
Munda raises banner of revolt
Refusing to take the oath of office as Union
Minister of State, Mr. Karia Munda has raised the banner of
revolt in the Bharatiya Janata Party even while staking claim to
the chief ministership of the new State of Jharkhand to be formed
on November 15. ``If I am not fit to be chief minister how can I
be fit for the job of central minister,'' Mr. Munda told
reporters, clearly seething with anger.

CS passes away
Elder statesman and recipient of Bharat Ratna,
Mr. C. Subramaniam, died here today. He was 90. He is survived by
wife, two daughters and a son, Mr. Rajasekhar.

A multi-faceted personality, Mr. C. Subramaniam,
was one of the last distinguished leaders of a generation who
actively participated in both India's freedom struggle and in her
post- independent development.
Millennium scheme
The India Millennium Deposit(IMD) scheme of
State Bank of India has been successful in raising a record $5.2
billions, about a billion dollar more than the $4.23 billions
mobilised through the Resurgent India Bonds floated in the wake
of the Pokhran tests in 1998.
PM to visit S-E Asia

Delhi HC grants bail to Rao, Buta Singh
The Delhi High Court today suspended the
sentence of three years' imprisonment awarded by the trial court
to the former Prime Minister, Mr. P.V. Narasimha Rao, and his
then Cabinet colleague, Mr. Buta Singh, in the Jharkhand Mukti
Morcha (JMM) MPs bribery case. Mr. Justice R.S. Sodhi, who
suspended the sentence, granted bail to them on their furnishing
a bond for Rs. 10,000 with one surety each for a like sum.
Nityanand Swami to be made CM
Mr. Nityanand Swami, Leader of the Uttar
Pradesh Legislative Council, will be the Chief Minister of the
newly-carved out State of Uttaranchal, BJP sources said here
tonight. Mr. Swami will be formally elected leader of the
Uttaranchal BJP legislators in Dehra Dun tomorrow.
