Bandh disrupts life in Manipur
IMPHAL, NOV. 7. The 17-hour Manipur bandh crippled normal life
today in the State amidst sporadic incidents of arson. Bandh
supporters set ablaze tyres and sprayed oil on several important
roads after blockading them with stones at Yumnam Leikai, Kongba
Bazar, Hhaobam Marak, Moirangkhom, Wangkhei, Tera and Khurai, in
the periphery of Imphal town.
Traffic was off the roads and shops, markets and business
establishments remained closed, official sources said. Transport
services between Manipur and neighbouring States remained
suspended. The Indian Airlines, however, operated its flights to
and from Imphal normally.
Attendance in the State and Central Government offices was
`almost nil.' Security was tight with forces deployed at all
vulnerable points. Patrolling in and around the State capital was
also intensified.
The bandh was called last night by six organisations - the All
Manipur Students Union, Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup, National
Identity Protection Committee, Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup
(Manipur market women's association), Zeliangrong Women's Society
and Kuki Mothers Association - to protest the killing of ten
persons at Tulihal Malhom area on November 2.
