dated November 11, 1950: ''Dark Clouds'' on the international horizon
Britain's Prime Minister, Mr. Attlee, declared in London on
November 9, that there were ``dark clouds'' on the international
horizon. He was addressing 840 guests at a banquet to mark the
inauguration of the new Lord Mayor of London. He added: ``There
are men who are prepared to resort to violence and those who seek
peace must be prepared to withstand the evil-doer.''
Mr. Attlee said that Britain sought ``untiringly'' for peace but
its people were determined to ``defend to the utmost'' their way
of life. If they had to fight in defence of their freedoms, they
were like the soldiers of Oliver Cromwell - ``men who know what
we fight for and love what we know.''For this comparison Mr.
Attlee went back 300 years to the evil war between the forces of
King Charles I and the troops under Cromwell's command in the
``King versus Parliament'' struggle.
On the North Atlantic Treaty, Mr. Attlee said: ``It is idle to
deny that there are difficulties in arriving at full agreement on
such a thorny subject as the participation of Germany in the
defence of Western Europe.
``Our policy has been made clear. We are in favour of setting up
a Supreme Command and effective integrated force for the defence
of Western Europe with as little delay as possible. We have also
accepted that under adequate safeguards there should be a
contribution by Germany to this force.''On Korea, Mr. Attlee
said: ``We all desire that this conflict should be localised and
brought to a successful end as soon as possible.''
