1,500 feared killed in Gujarat quake
At least 1,000 people were feared killed,
including about 300 in Ahmedabad city, and several thousands
injured in an earthquake which struck Gujarat this morning.
Several hundreds were also rendered homeless.
Relief on a war-footing
The Union Cabinet held an emergency meeting
this evening to take stock of the situation arising out of the
earthquake in Gujarat earlier in the day and decided to launch
relief on a war footing.

recordings taken by the National Geographical Research Institute
here has revealed that the devastating earthquake that struck
Gujarat early this morning measured 7.9 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake that devastated parts of
Gujarat has also affected Pakistan. Though the magnitude of the
quake as measured on the Richter Scale was high, it has not
caused much damage.
China, France register different intensities
China's seismological bureau has measured the
intensity of the Gujarat earthquake at 7.8 on the Richter scale,
higher than 6.9 reported by its Indian counterpart.
Leaders express shock
The Congress president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi,
has expressed deep shock and distress at the havoc caused by the
earthquake in Gujarat.
'Delhi ill-equipped to handle quakes'
``Delhi is ill-prepared in case of an
earthquake.'' This apprehension was expressed in a public
interest litigation pending before the Delhi High Court for the
last two years.
Severe tremors in Rajasthan
The devastating quake which struck Gujarat early
today triggered severe tremors in parts of western Rajasthan and
districts adjoining Gujarat. Damage to buildings was reported
from at least 15 districts while the quake had an impact in the
Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bikaner, Ajmer, Kota and Jaipur divisions.
Earthquake triggers oil slick
The earthquake which has caused extensive
damage in Gujarat has set off an oil slick near Kandla, which
could pose a major environmental problem.
Buildings develop cracks in Mumbai
If the earthquake took a toll of several lives
and property in Gujarat, the roll of tremors touched neighbouring
Maharashtra, including the densely-populated Mumbai. It sent the
chill down the spines this morning even as people were getting
ready to watch the Republic Day parade on television.
Russia sends team
Russia has despatched a rescue team to India to
help rescue people trapped in the debris of collapsed buildings
in the devastating earthquake in Gujarat.
Let us face the tragedy as one man: President, Vajpayee
The Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, today
appealed to the people, and voluntary organisations to render all
help to the Government in rescue and relief operations in Gujarat
and other quake-hit areas.
Bush offers assistance
The U.S. President, Mr. George W bush today
conveyed his condolence to the families affected by the
earthquake in Gujarat and offered assistance to the State.
Mamata sending Rly officials to Gujarat
The Railway Minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee,
tonight said that she was sending a team of Railway Board
officials and engineers to the earthquake devastated Gujarat for
assessing the damage and restoration of Railway lines on a war
footing.
