Heated exchanges at Gandhi Bhavan
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, JULY 2. Heated exchanges were witnessed between Mrs.
Renuka Chowdary, MP, and senior Congress leaders in Gandhi Bhavan
on Monday on the question of selecting party candidates from
Khammam district for the mandal and zilla parishad elections.
It was a fall-out of a protest lodged by party MLAs from Khammam
that the list of candidates she had submitted had been approved
by the PCC leadership. This ran contrary to the earlier assurance
given by the leadership to leave the choice of candidates
entirely to the MLAs.
Messrs. S. Chandrasekhar, R. Venkat Reddy and Younis Sultan,
Congress MLAs from Khammam district, met the PCC president, Mr.
M. Satyanarayana Rao, and the CLP leader, Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara
Reddy, today to demand scrapping of the list given by Mrs.
Chowdary. The leaders invited the Khammam MP to Gandhi Bhavan to
discuss the matter. During the discussion, Mrs. Chowdary
reportedly got upset over the attempt to change her list and
walked out from the meeting after exchanging angry remarks with
the MLAs. The Congress MLAs returned to their districts after the
leadership changed some candidates to their satisfaction.
