AIIMS allows blind to sit for exam
NEW DELHI, JULY 4. Acting on a directive by the National Human
Rights Commission (NHRC), the All India Institute of Medical
Sciences (AIIMS), has allowed a medical student, Mr. Anka Toppo,
who lost his eye-sight due to a disease, to sit for his final
MBBS examination.
Appreciating the efforts of the AIIMS Director, Mr. P.K. Dave and
his colleagues, the commission also said the Medical Council of
India (MCI) should make available the same facility in other
medical institutions as well.
Mr. Toppo had approached the commission after he was allegedly
denied permission in May for ``want of approval of guidelines''
from the MCI as his was the first such case, the release said.
He had also alleged that he was being ``harassed and
discriminated against as he is from a tribal community and his
blindness is being used to achieve this''.
According to the complaint, Mr. Toppo was admitted to AIIMS in
1989 against the seat for schedule tribes.
