Sonia deputes team to Moradabad

NEW DELHI, JULY 28 The Congress today despatched a 14- member-
strong Parliamentary and party delegation to Moradabad, for an on
the spot study of the incidents of rioting, rape and murder of
families belonging to minority community there. At least six
people including women and children were killed.
The team included 11 MPs, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is also the
party's General Secretary, Mr. Ramesh Chennitthala, Mr. Santosh
Mohan Dev, Begum Noor Bano, Mr. Sujan Singh Bundela, Mr. Khan
Gufran Zaidi, Mr. K. M. Khan, Mr. Avtar Singh Bhadana, Ms. Mabel
Rebello, Ms. Farida Topno and Mr. Mool Chand Meena.
The others in the team, deputed by the Congress President,Ms.
Sonia Gandhi, include another General Secretary, Mrs. Mohsina
Kidwai, former Union Minister, Mr. Jagdish Tytler and Mr.
Mohammed Afzal, Secretary of the party's Minority Department.
With all political parties gearing up for Assembly elections in
U.P., the Congress hopes to build bridges with the minority
community which had moved away from it during the past decade.
With caste and community playing an important role in U. P.
elections, the Congress also hopes to move closer to the
minorities who it feels was getting disenchanted with the
Samajwadi Party. The Congress team has a fair mix of people
belonging to the minorities including three MPs from Uttar
Pradesh.
