PMK dubbed an opportunist outfit

PONDICHERRY, JULY 28. Mr. K. Natarajan, secretary of Pondicherry unit of the AIADMK (a constituent in the ruling secular front), today charged the PMK leader, Dr. S. Ramadoss, with adopting opportunist policy and this was clearly seen by his frequent shifting of allegiance from one front to another.

In a statement here, Mr. Natarajan said Dr. Ramadoss was aware that only because of the AIADMK support could his party win the polls. The people of Pondicherry had identified the purpose of the sustained campaign of the PMK and defeated it in all the seats it contested here.

Mr. Natarajan said the PMK legislators in Tamil Nadu should have resigned and only then shifted to any other front. Instead, the PMK leader retained the MLAs and shifted allegiance. This deserved to be condemned, he added.

In another statement, Mr. Natarajan said that the DMK while in power here had conceded the direction of the Centre to implement the uniform sales tax. It had also sought Rs. 170 crores as compensation every year so that the uniform tax could be adopted in Pondicherry. But now the DMK was opposing the UST.

Mr. Natarajan wanted to know why the DMK now part of the NDA and having its ministers in the Central Cabinet had not taken steps to prevent implementation of the new taxes. He appealed to the Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, to convene a meeting with all party leaders and evolve a solution to prevent the new taxation.
