Bid to politicise killing will boomerang, says Rajnath
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr. Rajnath Singh, has expressed his determination to ``finish'' the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) - the Bharatiya Janata Party's rivals in the State - before the next Assembly election.

Umed Singh questioned
The Crime Branch of Delhi police today questioned Mr. Umed Singh, husband of Phoolan Devi, in connection with her murder even as they continued with the interrogation of prime accused, Sher Singh Rana alias Pankaj, who had confessed to the crime in Dehra Dun on July 27 and subsequently been remanded to 10-day police custody by a Delhi court on Saturday.

'Centre has over-riding powers in IPS transfers'
The Union Law Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley, has asserted that the Centre has ``over-riding powers'' in the transfer of IPS officers, with or without the concurrence of the State Government concerned.

Left flays Centre's directive
The Left parties have condemned the Centre's move to requisition the services of three senior IPS officers of Tamil Nadu cadre, dubbing the decision as politically-motivated and violative of the norms governing Centre-State relations.

Jaswant's amendment rejected
The attempt by the External Affairs Minister, Mr. Jaswant Singh, to tone down the resolution on the Agra summit met with stiff resistance from the Bharatiya Janata Party's national executive committee yesterday, with the result that an amendment suggested by him was rejected.

The Amarnath yatra was today suspended in view of heavy rain lashing the two routes to the cave shrine since last night.

Cong. leader shot at
The general secretary of Madhya Pradesh unit of the Congress, Mr. Inder Prajapat, today shot at and wounded another party general secretary, Mr. Manak Agarwal, suspecting him to be behind a newspaper report about his second marriage, a senior police official said.
