BMP planning to build three more crematoria
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, JULY 29. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) is
planning to build three electric crematoria, the BMP
Commissioner, Mr. Ashok.M.Dalwai, has said.
He told the BMP Council on Saturday that while the Bommanahalli
crematorium would be commissioned next month, work on the
Banashankari crematorium would be completed by September.
``The Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna, recently directed the BMP
to upgrade and build more crematoria in the City,'' Mr. Dalwai
said.
The BMP's Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) has been asked to
identify land for the new crematoria. Work on these crematoria
would begin as soon as land was identified, he said.
Raising the issue, Ms. Padmavathy Gangadhara Gowda, former Mayor,
said the staff at the crematoria harassed the mourners.
``There is corruption in crematoria. The staff are illiterate.
They do not even know how to take down the names and addresses of
the dead. But they demand money from the relatives of the dead,''
she said.
Mr. S.K.Nataraj, Leader of the Opposition, said the staff caused
unnecessary delay in the issuance of death certificates.
Mr. Dalwai assured the Council that a short training programme
would be held for the staff of non-electric crematoria. ``All
illiterate persons posted at crematoria will be removed and
literate personnel will be posted,'' he said.
``Our focus is to have more electric crematoria. So, three more
have been planned,'' he said.
Kempambudhi Lake
The BMP Council approved the Rs.3-crore first phase scheme to
develop Kempambudhi Lake.
Sewing Machines
The Deputy Commissioner (Education and Social Welfare), Mr.
Y.K.Muddukrishna, assured the members that sewing machines would
be given to all those trained at the BMP tailoring centres by
September.
After finalising tenders, the BMP had selected Usha to supply the
machines. In tune with the Government's policy of ensuring
transparency in tenders, the BMP would send the proposal to the
Government on Monday seeking permission to purchase 13,700 sewing
machines at a cost of Rs.2,170 each, he said.
Computer centres
The BMP would initiate legal action against computer centres
(hired by the BMP to train students under its social welfare
programme) which did not follow the agreement signed with them.
Responding to complaints from members about some of the centres
which did not give good training to candidates, Mr. Muddukrishna
said action would be initiated against the erring centres.
