Sedition case: High Court admits Sun TV plea

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, AUG 1. The Madras High Court today admitted a petition filed on behalf of the Sun TV, seeking to implead itself as a party in a sedition case against the channel.

Mr. Justice Malai. Subramanian, adjourned the matter to August 8.

The case pertains to a complaint by one Mr. M. M. K. Mohammed Ibrahim of Keelakarai, who alleged that the Sun TV, by telecasting `distorted version' of the former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi's arrest episode, attempted to incite public hatred against the police and the Government.

An affidavit was filed today, terming the charges as `false, frivolous and motivated'. Noting that the telecast was not in violation of any law, the affidavit said though many other channels carried the same visual, only the Sun TV was singled out for harassment.

Since the Justice Raman Committee, appointed by the Government, was probing the incidents occurred during the arrest of Mr. Karunanidhi, the petition was liable to be rejected inliminie (admission stage), the affidavit said.
