Assam order on tea gardens registration

By Barun Das Gupta

GUWAHATI, AUG. 4. Those tea gardens in Assam, which were so far not required to register themselves and pay the annual fee for the renewal of registration will have to do so now.

The State Labour and Employment Minister, Mr. Rameshwar Dhanwar, said today that registration would be made mandatory for tea gardens having more than 30 `bighas' but less than 250 `bighas' of land. Such gardens are exempted from registration.

He said the Government was going to increase the amount of pension payable under the deposit-linked insurance scheme of the Assam Tea Plantation Provident Fund and Pension Scheme (ATPPFPS) from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000.

In the event of untimely death of a tea worker, the insurance money is paid either to his son till he attains the age of 18 or to his daughter till her marriage. As a part of the Government's efforts at resource mobilisation, it was being proposed to raise the factory licence fee from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5000, he said.

Contractors doing government job now pay a nominal registration fee of Rs. 10 to Rs. 20. This is proposed to be increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000. Mr. Dhanwar said the fee now charged in Assam was low. The Government is thinking of raising it to the level fixed in most other States.
