Senate 'go-ahead' for Bush
Washington, Sept. 14. The U.S. Senate on Friday gave its consent
for the President to use force against those responsible for this
week's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. It earlier
approved $40 billion in emergency aid to help the victims and
hunt down the perpetrators of the attacks.
Commanders back Musharraf
Islamabad, Sept. 14. Within hours of the U.S. making known the
list of things it expected Islamabad to do in helping it track
down the culprits of Tuesday's terrorist attacks, the Pakistan
President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, today secured the support of
the entire top military brass to extend fullest cooperation to
Washington.
Bush declares national emergency
Washington, Sept. 14. The U.S. President, Mr. George W. Bush,
today declared a national emergency in the wake of the terrorist
attacks on New York and Washington.
Strike at the roots of terrorism: PM
New Delhi, Sept. 14. The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari
Vajpayee, today demanded that ``the world must join hands to
overwhelm (terrorists) militarily, to neutralise their poison''
and called upon the nation that ``every Indian has to be a part
of this global war on terrorism''.
FBI questioning two 'Indians'
Washington, Sept. 14. With officials casting the net far and wide
to apprehend those involved in the attacks on New York and
Washington, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is
investigating in Texas two individuals, who claim they are from
India.
India pledges support to fight terrorism
New Delhi, Sept. 14. The Government today strongly signalled that
India was willing to help ``in every possible way'' the global
fight against terrorism even as it pressed its long-held view
that terrorist acts against any one country cannot be seen as
problems of that country alone.
Taliban denies Osama's involvement
Islamabad, Sept. 14. Striking a tough posture against any
possible retaliation by the U.S., the Taliban today not only
denied the involvement of Osama bin Laden in the attacks in the
U.S. on Tuesday but also maintained that it would take revenge in
the event of strikes against Afghanistan.
Indian embassy concerned about attacks on Indians
Washington, Sept. 14. Indian missions in this country - the
Consulate in New York and the Embassy in Washington - are doing
their best to help the community in the aftermath of the tragedy
that struck New York and Washington on Tuesday.
SC rejects T.N. CM's plea
New Delhi, Sept. 14. The Supreme Court today rejected the plea of
the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, for an early
hearing of her appeals pertaining to the TANSI land scam case by
the Madras High Court.
Akash test-fired
Balasore (Orissa), SEPT. 14. India's most sophisticated
integrated medium-range surface-to-air missile `Akash' was
successfully test-fired today from the Interim Test Range (ITR)
at Chandipur-on-sea about 15 km. from here.
Shares crash
Mumbai, Sept. 14 Shares succumbed to heavy panic selling on the
National Stock Exchange here today and nosedived, following fears
of an immediate U.S. assault on Afghanistan in retaliation to
Tuesday's terrorist attacks.
