Ex-Minister hurt in poll clash

By Our Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR, SEPT. 20. A former minister in the Rashtriya Janata Party government in Gujarat was injured in a clash between the Congress and BJP supporters during the polling for the Sabarkantha Lok Sabha seat byelection today.

According to a report reaching here, Mr. Vinendrasinh Jhala sustained injuries during the clash outside a polling booth in Himmatnagar town, the district headquarters, following some altercations with the BJP supporters over alleged bogus voting. The Congress aspirant for the seat is the former State president of the RJP, Mr Madhusudan Mistry.

Barring some other stray incidents, polling for both the Sabarkantha parliamentary and the Sabarmati State Assembly seats ended peacefully amidst strong security measures in view of the large number of ``sensitive booths'' identified by the election commission in the two constituencies. Re-polling has been ordered in two booths in Danta Assembly segment of the Sabarkantha lok sabha seat to be held tomorrow.

Both the seats reported low polling with Sabarmati, a segment of the union home minister, Mr L. K. Advani's Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency, estimating just 30 to 35 per cent turn out and Sabarkantha about 35 to 40 per cent voting. Counting of votes will be taken up on Saturday.
