Lessons for India
Sir, - The carnage in New York has some lessons for India.
Starting with instant evacuation announcements over loudspeakers
in the World Trade Center, the disaster management system was
activated at once. All people, including those in distress, acted
with equanimity and discipline. In a similar Indian scenario,
people would have first demanded the resignation of the Prime
Minister without bothering about remedial measures.
It is time we keep disaster management personnel and equipment in
a state of perpetual readiness for meeting any eventuality.
Emergency phone numbers, such as those of police, ambulance and
fire services, should be well publicised. Educating the public
and training all employees working in public buildings with
periodic mock drills should be a continuous process. Eternal
vigilance alone can bring safety and security from disasters in
the present day world.
