Ragas on the net
THE ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, has a rich repository
of Hindustani Classical music which can now be enjoyed through
their web portal `www.itcra.org'.
A highlight of the portal is its `Gharana' section.
Representative of the many Gurus of the style, it hopes to make
available the 10 major gharanas to music lovers worldwide.
With different sections of SRA Gurus, information on legendary
musicians and their music, the portal also provides a peep into a
documentation of over 500 bandishes.
These have been culled out from over 1,000 hours of recording of
41 living and learned musicians. The project was funded by a
grant from the Ford Foundation.
Among the other interesting segments are `Know Your Raga', an
innovative online education tool, `Samay Ragas', where one can
listen to a raga relevant to a particular time of the day.
By using the `Samay Chakra' with its 12 time zones, ragas
appropriate to each time zone can be accessed and heard in the
singer's voice of your choice.
