'Ensure smooth working of textile mills'
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 29. Mr. N. Kalainathan, president of the
Pondicherry State Committee of the CPI, and Mr. T. Murugan,
secretary of the Pondicherry Pradesh Committee of the CPM, in a
joint statement today urged the administration to initiate
immediate steps to reactivate the NTC-run Swadeshi Mills here.
They said it was really unfortunate that the administration was
turning a deaf ear to the plight of the workers in the textile
industry here. Alleging that the Swadeshi Mills which was
employing nearly 3500 workers prior to 1985 and similarly the
Bharathi Mills that employed prior to that year as many as 2500
workers now witnessed a reduced workers strength. of little over
400 workers in each of these two mills run by the NTC.
The AFT Mill should also be toned up and wages should be revised
as recommended by the Special Industrial Tribunal.
