Suicide bomber targets J&K Assembly
Srinagar, Oct. 1. Twenty-two persons, mostly civilians, were
killed and 60 injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up
outside the Jammu and Kashmir State Assembly here today.
Rein in Lashkar, Jaish too, India tells Pak.
New Delhi, Oct.1. India today said that it expected Pakistan to
curb recognised terrorist groups including the Jaish-e-Mohammad
(JeM) and the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Both these outfits belonged
to the elaborate network of terrorist organisations which are
freely operating from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir
(PoK).
Stern warning to Pak.
New Delhi, Oct.1. India today issued a virtual ultimatum to
Pakistan to stop aiding and abetting terrorism after militants
led by a suicide bomber attacked the Jammu and Kashmir assembly
today.
Musharraf: Taliban's days are numbered
Islamabad, Oct. 1. The first signs of an imminent attack on
Afghanistan were visible today when the Pakistan President, Gen.
Pervez Musharraf, told an international television channel that
the days of the Taliban militia appeared "numbered."
Cabinet expresses grief over Scindia's death
New Delhi, Oct. 1. In an unusual gesture, the Union Cabinet
placed on record its condolences over the sudden demise of the
senior Congress(I) leader, Mr. Madhavrao Scindia, in an aircrash
in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
Narendra Modi emerges front-runner for CM post
New Delhi, Oct. 1. As the search for the successor of the Gujarat
Chief Minister, Mr. Keshubhai Patel, began in right earnest
today, Mr. Narendra Modi, Bharatiya Janata Party general
secretary, emerged a front-runner. However, the matter has yet to
be clinched for there is considerable opposition to him from the
Keshubhai camp.
BNP leading in Bangla polls
Dhaka, Oct. 1. Begum Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist
Party-led four-party alliance is leading in the parliamentary
elections held in Bangladesh today, reports said. According to
preliminary results announced by the Election Commission in 66 of
the 299 seats, the BNP was leading in 26 and its ally, the
Jamaat-e-Islami, in four. And the former Prime Minister, Ms.
Sheikh Hasina's Awami League was leading in 15 constituencies.
Pankaj Joshi is new CIDS
New Delhi, Oct. 1. Lt. Gen. Pankaj Joshi today took over as the
country's firstChief of Integrated Defence Staff (CIDS) and Lt.
Gen. N.C. Vij as the new Vice-Chief of Army Staff.
Plane forcelands
New Delhi, Oct. 1. Forty passengers aboard a Bishkek-bound plane
of Kyrgyztan Airlines had a providential escape this evening when
it made an emergency landing at the Indira Gandhi international
airport here immediately after take-off following failure of one
of its engines, airport sources told PTI.
