Cong. fields candidates for 147 divisions

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, OCT. 8. The Congress (I) has fielded candidates for 147 divisions of the Corporation, the maximum by any single party, for the ensuing local bodies polls.

Among the 1,118 candidates in the fray for the 155 seats in the Council, 521 candidates were being considered as Independents. The list of Independent councillor-aspirants has candidates of the newly-formed Congress Jananayaga Peravai led by Mr. P. Chidambaram, the Viduthalai Siruthaigal, the Samata Party and the Janata Dal (United) as none of these parties are in the State Election Commission's list of recognised parties in the national and State level.

The ruling party in the council, DMK, which had 95 councillors, has this time fielded 127 candidates with its allies, the BJP and the PMK fielding 12 and 15 candidates respectively.

On the other hand, 114 candidates are contesting for councillors' posts from the AIADMK. However, the representation of its ally, the TMC which had 52 councillors in the last Council, will be down, at 38 seats.

The MDMK, preferring going alone in the local bodies polls, has fielded 116 candidates. The CPI(M) has a strong representation in North and Central Chennai and fourteen of its 20 candidates were contesting from different divisions in the region. The CPI has fielded eight candidates.
