Murder case accused elected unopposed

TIRUNELVELI, OCT. 15: Two persons, who were involved in many serious crimes including murders and detained under the Goondas Act, have been elected unopposed councillors of the North Valliyoor town panchayat.

According to official sources, P. Ramachandran (29) and N. Shanmuga Pandi (35), both of Valliyoor, have been elected from wards 15 and 16.

A total of 18 serious cases, including three of murder, and three attempt to murder, were pending against Ramachandran. He was detained under the Goondas Act twice in 1995 and 1997.

N. Shanmuga Pandi was involved in three murder cases, two attempt to murder cases and three cases of possession of explosives. He was booked under the Goondas Act in 1996. A DMK man filed his nomination for ward 16, but withdrew the papers at the last- minute.

Meena, wife of another rowdy element, Madasamy alias Katta Madasamy, was also elected unopposed, from ward 17. She is the sister of Ramachandran.
