We are moved, U.S. legislators tell India
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, OCT. 17. Forty-nine U.S. Congressmen have appreciated
India's offer of help and support to the U.S. after the September
11 attacks. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari
Vajpayee, the members of the U.S. Congress said today that they
were ``deeply moved and impressed when your Government offered us
your assistance after the tragic events of September 11.''
Hailing India's anti-terrorism capabilities as among the best in
the world, they said the U.S. needed its expertise and friendship
more than ever. The letter referred to the Joint Working Group on
terrorism formed during the former U.S. President, Mr. Bill
Clinton's tenure and said it had laid the foundation for deeper
bilateral cooperation on the issue. ``We are strongly supportive
of a full engagement between India and American counter-terrorism
experts, we cannot allow this momentum to stall.''
Prominent among those who signed the letter were the co-chairman
of the American-India Caucus, Mr. Jim McDermott, Mr. Frank
Pallone, Mr. Ed Royce, Mr. Joe Crawley, Mr. Rush Holt, Ms.
Barbara Lee, Mr. Jerry Lewis, Ms. Hilda Solis and Ms. Nita Lowey.
