Nepalese allege harassment
By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, DEC. 23. The fifth all India conference of the All India Nepalese Unity Society (AINUS) will be held in Hyderabad between February 10 and 13, 2002.

Mr. Giridhari Lal Neupane, President, AINUS, and Mr. Dila Ram Acharya, M.P., House of Representatives, Nepal, addressing a press conference here on Sunday said that issues such as equal treatment for Nepalese in India as per the 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty would be discussed during the conference.

They charged that the AINUS members were being harassed by the police in India in the name of links with Maoist groups in Nepal. Refuting the allegations that AINUS had connections with Maoist groups, the Association President and the MP said that they were opposing the violent methods being adopted by Maoist groups in Nepal.

They said that three activists of AINUS, Mr. K. Ratan Singh, Mr Prem Paudel and Mr Anand Thapa, were picked up by the Task Force police from the city on December 2 and let off after questioning.

The Gorakhpur police of Uttar Pradesh had recently taken Mr. Ratan to Gorakhpur for interrogation. However, the police released him as the alleged links with Maoist groups were not established.
